Adolescent Health: A Critical Phase of Life

The transition from a child to teenager is a confusing and critical period in one's life. They undergo significant changes in their physical and emotional state. While navigating through their friendships, school and college applications they go through many different emotions. In this stressful period they might neglect their health which in fact should be prioritized.

One of the most significant health concerns during adolescence is mental health. The pressure to perform well academically, socially, and extracurricularly can take a toll on a teenager's mental well-being. Teenagers often complain of less sleep or no sleep at all. It is important adolescents get adequate sleep required.  Anxiety, depression, and stress are common mental health issues that adolescents face. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 10-20% of adolescents worldwide experience mental health disorders. It is essential for parents, educators, and healthcare providers to recognize the signs of mental health issues and provide support and resources to adolescents in need.

Another critical aspect of adolescent health is physical activity. Regular exercise is essential for maintaining a healthy weight, developing strong bones and muscles, and reducing the risk of chronic diseases. Unfortunately, many adolescents lead sedentary lifestyles, spending excessive amounts of time watching TV, playing video games, or browsing social media. Spending so much time on their screens isn't good for their mental health. It can also lead to teenagers being consumed by the glamorous world of media which is usually not true in real life. Incidents such as cyberbullying can lower their self esteem and self confidence.  It is vital that teenagers spend little time on screens. Physical activity is very important for their developmental years. The WHO recommends that adolescents engage in at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily. Encouraging adolescents to participate in sports, dance, or other physical activities can help them develop healthy habits that last a lifetime.

Nutrition is also a vital component of adolescent health. A balanced diet provides the necessary fuel for growth and development. Adolescents require adequate amounts of protein, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates to support their rapid growth and development. Many adolescents consume a diet high in processed and fast foods, sugary drinks, and saturated fats. They underestimate the benefits of water and opt for energy drinks or cold drinks. It plays a key role in many of our body's functions, including bringing nutrients to cells, getting rid of wastes, protecting joints and organs, and maintaining body temperature. Water should almost always be one's go-to beverage.

Having packaged drinks only makes them lazy and can affect their growth. Avoiding packaged and junk food or minimising eating out should be encouraged. Educating adolescents about the importance of healthy eating and providing them with access to nutritious foods can help them develop healthy eating habits. Maintaining a healthy balanced diet and having enough water is crucial for adolescents' health.

In conclusion, adolescent health is a critical concern that requires attention and care. Mental health, physical activity, and nutrition are essential components of adolescent health that require careful consideration. By providing adolescents with the necessary support, resources, and education, we can help them develop healthy habits that last a lifetime and set them up for a bright and healthy future.
